| John
Van Domelen's grandfather introduced him to the beauty of crafted wood. Since
then, he has taken his own inspiration and methodologies and combined them with
a concern for the natural environment. He uses cutoffs and visits tree trimmers
and housing developments to recycle wood destined for a landfill. Some of his
works are made from exotic woods, some from wood collected in the aftermath of
Hurricane Ike. He both carves by hand and turns with a lathe, and uses a variety
of additional processes including burning and dying. His hope is to inspire a
future generation to explore the artistic properties of wood. |
